What is a SEER?
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio This is like an MPG rating on a car. The higher the number the more energy efficient. New units have ratings from 10 to 17 SEER, older units had ratings as low as 6 SEER. This rating applies to Air Conditioners.
What is an AFUE?
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. The higher the number the more energy efficient. New units have ratings from 78% to 96%. Older units have ratings of 55% to 60%. This rating applies to Furnaces.
What is HSPF?
Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. The higher the number, the more efficient. New units have
ratings from 7.0 to 9.4. This rating applies to Heat Pumps.
Which is best, Heat Pump or Natural Gas Heat?
That depends on many things. The price of natural gas & electricity, how well your home is insulated, how your duct is installed and insulated.
I am replacing my Air Conditioner. Do I need a new indoor Evaporator Coil?
In most cases yes. If you don't, the life of your new Air Conditioner may be shortened, not work properly and it could use more electricity than necessary. For more information see our Evaporator Coils page
